Rarely do you have a complete day worth blogging about. I was given the sweet gift of such a day.
This day did not start like any other day, it started out blessed. You can say this when you have had many a mornings where you just want to hide under the covers and not come out.
We have been working with the kids on not coming into our room so early every morning and expecting us to bounce right out of bed ready for the day, it just doesn’t happen for mom and dad that way! Hayden has always gotten up at 6:00 AM and daddy always gets up with him and they have ‘their’ time. While Gillian will crawl into bed with me and sleep in with me. This all sounds sweet and believe me sometimes it really is. But, we are trying to break some of the expectations that come with all that sweetness.
I am certain that this morning was a fluke, but it was a special morning for mom and dad. Hayden woke up at his usual time, he got dressed, made his bed (without prompting), came in and told Daddy he would be downstairs. Whoa!! A few minutes later, Gillian walks in and says, I am going downstairs. Humm…I am barely awake but this all strikes me as a bit out of sorts. But, I lose that thought as I fall back to sleep only to be awakened by our new puppy who is now needing to outside.
I get dressed to take the dogs outside and I come downstairs and Hayden has not only made his bed etc. He is making breakfast for he and his sister. He got the toaster and frozen waffles out and created a mouth watering masterpiece. At the point of my entering the room, I see him pouring a handful of chocolate chips onto their waffles and lightly topped that with syrup. He also poured each of them a cup of milk. I had to tell you, my first thought was, “I am dreaming this, I am not awake!”
I was so happy at that moment and I could tell they both were too. Simple acts of kindness and independence we my first gift of the day.
The other gift was delivered not much later that morning. We packed up and went to the pool. Hayden had a sub today in class and he was also the only child there for about the first 10 minutes of class, so he got a private lesson for that time. He seemed determined today to meet some sort of personal challenge he had. He did all that was asked of him in class and was doing it so much better than he ever has. He even looked to be enjoying himself. I was so happy for him, he finally is letting go of the fear he and I both share around water. I can really imagine how he must feel as I know how I would feel if I were him accomplishing these tasks.
If that was not enough we spent the rest of the morning at the pool with friends. This is always good because they get to practice the techniques they are learning and apply them while they are having fun. Three HUGE accomplishments for the kids were: 1: Gillian got her face in the water; 2. Hayden went down the lazy river alone; 3. Hayden went down the slide and loved it.
All this brought me such joy. What a blessed day!
You are such a sweet and encouraging mama! I am glad you had a wonderful morning.
