Whew! Back from a great trip, thinking back on it all, fondly.

If you know me at all, you know how hard it is for me to be away from my family. This year was no exception and probably was even a bit harder for this girl. Why? You may or may not wonder, but I am gonna tell you. Ha! This particular trip always falls on two very special birthdays. That of my first born and that of my best friend. Do you know the sadness and guilt that comes along with that alone? Well take that and add that it was my baby boy’s 13th birthday!! Yep! His momma was absent for his 13th birthday! What momma could be so remiss?

The beautiful thing is that my boys love me so big that they graciously gave me their blessing. God has a way of working all things out for the good.

Shortly after all the flights were booked, the convention fee’s paid etc. I remembered that we had planned a special 13th birthday date with our son. We had planned to take him to his first concert! You can guess the sheer horror when I realized this concert – that never made it on our family calendar- was now on the same date that I actually flew out of Colorado? Oh the turmoil and grief I put myself through, how selfish of me to forget. Once again. God showed up, once again my boys poured out their grace. I so did not deserve it.

Once again, all things worked out beautifully.

God gave me peace to live in the moment. To enjoy the place that he had me in. Although I occasionally wondered what Hayden was experiencing the evening of the concert and how Kip was doing with three teenage boys at a rock concert, I was able to just find contentment in what I was experiencing.

The boys had a fabulous time, it was as magical as I had hoped it would be, Hayden went to see Journey, one of the very first groups I saw in concert. He loved it just as much as I loved it 25 years ago. <3

Sum, Sum, Summer time………..

Summer holds a dear place in my heart because I get to spend more time with my family. I enjoy the more relaxed schedules, the sleeping in a bit later, staying up a bit later and our little getaways.

I cannot imagine doing life without my best friend and our two little minions (and their friends). Every little trip is an opportunity for adventure and great memories. This trip met that expectation and more.

This past weekend we took a day trip to the Sand Dunes. Our goal was get there before all of the water disappeared, we finally made it!

It was a blast, just hanging out and playing in the water. Kip and I kept commenting how great it was just watching our kids be kids. Something about water just brings the kid out in people. When we first got there they were all uncertain if they wanted to take their shoes off and walk through the water. Once they did, they hunkered down and played for a nice long while, splashing through the water and playing in the sand.

As fun as it was to play in the water, the Dunes were calling us. We all agreed we needed to climb to the top of the highest one. I had forgotten how ‘un-fun’ it was to walk through deep sand. However, I was not going to be the one to crack, so I trudged along behind everyone else.

It was a beautiful hike, we could see a storm starting to come over us, and we were pretty unsure if we were going to make it to the top in time. The boys made it up much faster than Gillian and I did, in fact they pretty much ran up the last climb. Gillian would have gotten up with the boys but she insisted on walking with me. Love my girl. We had fun just taking our time.

Once we got to the top, we heard thunder in the distance so we all ran down, some of us tried rolling down – @sandinplacessandshouldntbe. As we got near the bottom it started to sprinkle – I’d say we had pretty awesome timing.

As we went back across the water, we were all very shocked to find that the water temperature had changed dramatically. When we first got there it was so warm and inviting, as we were leaving it was cold and refreshing. It was just a perfect little day trip. A memory worth storing.

Everyone still smiling…….must have been a good day!

In all of my years I have never really enjoyed big New Year’s Eve celebrations. It always seemed like a lot of hooplah or an excuse for people to drink and eat way too much. I am a hang at home, play games with the family, eat fondue kind of girl. That is how we have celebrated with our kids and have loved it. However, this past year, as our kids are getting a bit older they really wanted to stay up and have fun with friends and ‘ring in the new year’ with sparkling cider, noise makers and fireworks. I did happen to still sneak in fondue but never quite made it to games. I do have to say that it was one of my absolute favorite New Year’s Eve celebrations. I loved, I mean LOVED hanging out with my dear hubby, my two precious children, my parents, sister and 3 of my kids friends. It was magical and a very special way to ring in 2014. So thankful for these moments, they remind me of what is important in life.

In an effort to get more nutrients into my sweet peeps diets, I have been embracing the lure of smoothies. I mean, who wouldn’t rather have a smoothie over a salad, right?

I know that Kip and I have enjoyed getting creative with our fruit and veggies. Frequently, I will gather a concoction of ingredients and work them so that they are getting good stuff without them knowing it. So far the easiest has been Kale, thankfully it is just colorful without a strong flavor. Flax & Spinach are two another staples in our smoothies. To make them pleasing to their pallets we add many of these other varieties: Pumpkin, mango, berries, apples, grapefruit, oranges, peaches, pears, pineapple, watermelon, lemon, grapes, bananas, kiwi, peanut butter, almond milk, coconut milk and carrots to name a few.

I am not a huge fan of beets, but I am working up the courage to add them to our list of ingredients. After all, I need to be willing to try new things as well, right?

As a mom it has made life easier, no fussing and I feel good that they are getting more of what their bodies need.

Today’s smoothie is: Grapefruit, banana, kale & flax seed! Yummy!

Tonight, on our 890th day of our reading streak, we completed another book. We just finished a book by Sharon Creech, called Walk Two Moons, a Newbery Medal winner.

We discovered Sharon Creech, when our dear Aunt Frances sent us a box of her favorite books that she has collected over the years. Aunt Frances has always shared our love for adventure that books bring us and because she once taught school we have relied very much on her suggestions for books for us to read as a family. Hayden and Gillian always love when Aunt Frances visits because she will spend hours with them going through books. Tomorrow we will start another book by Sharon Creech called, Absolutely Normal Chaos. Looking forward to it!

We brought back our Christmas letter, I have always loved the letters that Kip writes. I am so thankful that he took the time to write one this year.

Merry Christmas. Sorry it’s been a few years since we’ve done one of these, but here we go.

As most of you know, in late June, a wildfire in Waldo Canyon destroyed several homes in Colorado Springs. During that time, we experienced an emotional roller coaster ride that we could never have imagined.

Early on June 26, Kip sent the following email to his family members.
Tuesday, June 26, 6:48am
“We’re fine. It’s a couple miles away but it would take something apocalyptic for it to make it to our house. I’m more concerned for the folks who are right on the edge.”

Later that day something ‘apocalyptic’ did happen.

Around 4pm we looked out the window and, during a break in the haze, saw the flames top the ridge across the street. Sirens started sounding from every direction and the roads became gridlocked as people starting fleeing. We filled our cars with as much as we could, considering our belongings included 3 dogs, 2 ferrets, and one cat.

We evacuated and eventually made it to our friends’ home later that night.

We were without Hayden who had been at a friend’s home since the previous day. Shortly after midnight he called us. This boy had watched from across town as the flames rushed down on his neighborhood. He put up a brave front all day, but that was over. He needed to come “home.” We drove to pick him up and around 1am on the 27th we were finally all back together. We were blessed enough to be staying in a spacious home with enough rooms and beds for all, but on that first night we all slept together on the living room floor.

Late that first night we feared for the loss of our home, Nicole’s (Kim’s sister), home and Kim’s parent’s home. Early the following morning we heard from an eyewitness that they saw Kim’s sister’s home burning and we reluctantly broke the news to her. Given the proximity of Kim’s parent’s home to the worst parts of the fire, we were certain their home was gone as well.

However, throughout the day, as information started to flow in, it was one bit of good news after another. We have friends in both the CSPD and with the Volunteer Fire Dept. and both confirmed that as of the previous night our home was fine. We were happy that at least one of the three homes in the family would be there when we all returned, even if we would be a bit cramped. Later, initial thermal images were released and it appeared that the fire stopped just short of the other homes in our family as well (within feet in both cases). Finally, aerial camera shots confirmed that all were still standing.

One strange thing about this whole experience is the small amount of time it took to process potentially losing our home. Late that first night, once Hayden was back with us, we realized all was well. Sure, it’s easy to say since we didn’t end up losing our home and we don’t want to diminish the pain inflicted on hundreds that night who did. But we had what we needed. And as far as stuff goes, we have too much anyway. We would rebuild, but rebuild better and smarter. That night, as we were getting sleepier and starting to drift off, at this point still pretty sure that our home may be gone Gillian looked up and said, “Can I get a new bed?” We just laughed and said, “Yep.”

Three days later, we went home.

After a number of years of marriage we find ourselves making decisions that we would have laughed at years ago. One of those decisions this year was taking a short Anniversary vacation to Breckenridge… WITH our kids. Our family has simple pleasures and one of them is heading to the hills so it seemed a shame to not bring everyone along. Our children are incredible traveling companions and it was a very memorable trip. We had great time simply eating good food, taking our kids on high altitude hikes, and then relaxing.

Kip started a new job in late summer. After spending the last couple of years working for a slow-moving corporation with a quarter million employees he thought it would be nice to try something a bit less bureaucratic. So, he took a job working for the U.S. Government. Yeah. Actually, he’s working as a defense contractor on some pretty fun stuff and he gets to do it from the “peace” and “quiet” of his own home. So far we love it and Kim is handling him being at home all the time as well as can be expected… all things considered.

This summer we were finally able to do something we hadn’t gotten around to yet… horseback riding. The entire family was thrilled. Most of the family was thrilled. Half of the family was thrilled. We spent a few days in Pagosa Springs with friends and did an extended trail ride as a family. It was beautiful and not too painful. All of the children but Gillian were boys, but in this particular group Gillian becomes an honorary boy. All of this to say, do you have any idea how funny horse farts and horse poop are?

With Kip working at home, we’ve rediscovered the fantastic park across from our home and walk/hike almost daily. It’s not huge, but it’s big enough that we can see new things almost every time we go. It’s been a blessing to just walk, talk and reconnect while the kids are at school. The kids love the park as much as we do and with all the hiking we are doing, we are looking forward to getting the kids to the top of a couple 14’ers next summer.

School is going well for both kids. Gillian is in third grade and has an absolutely wonderful teacher this year. Hayden is in fifth, but looks like he could be a sophomore in High School. We’re not kidding. He is taller than almost all of his classmates and many of the teachers. We are very pleased with the friends Hayden and Gillian have chosen at school, such a neat group of kids from wonderful families. I can’t say enough how blessed we are that our children go to such an amazing school.

Gillian had a great year with ballet and had some wonderful opportunities to grow this Fall/Winter. She auditioned for a production of the Nutcracker and ended up dancing several parts. What a fabulous experience it was for her. We have seen more of a desire from her to get more serious about her dancing. Dancing with the older girls in the production has really inspired her and given her lots to work toward. There is something about watching your daughter mature as a dancer and see God’s gifts in her as she glows and truly looks like she is loving every minute of it.

For better or worse, Hayden is a chip off the old block and is a computer wiz (actually he’s an anything-technical wiz). He loves film making and has had the opportunity to create several films with his friends along with dozens of videos on his own. We’ve gotten to the point where when we get a new lens or any other piece of photography equipment for ourselves, we just hand it over to him since we know he’s eventually going to swipe it anyway. And to be fair, he’s probably got more talent anyway. His favorite class in school is no surprise, computer class. He has impressed his teacher with his typing score. Our boy types 97 wpm with 100% accuracy.

Kim continues to do more work for less pay than one would have believed possible. We have a very incredible school with a tremendous amount of parental involvement and involved she is. She heads in to each successive year determined to take it easy but she also heads in to each successive year with a diminished ability to say “no.” The children, their teachers, and their school are enormously blessed as a result.

Last year for Christmas, Gillian talked us into getting her a couple of ferrets. We were very hesitant, but since she promised to take good care of them and always clean the cage (pause here for extended laughter) we acquiesced. It ended up being a wonderful decision. They are a hoot. You can just turn them lose, sit back, watch and laugh. They are so fun. Unfortunately, Lizzy, who was not doing so well heading into November died on Thanksgiving Day. That was hard for all of us, but especially Gillian.

Number 452 on the list of things we said we’d never do.
We got a cat. He’s cool. We apologize to everything we’ve ever said about cat owners. We get it now.

That’s it, more or less. It’s been a crazy year and we’re all standing and very blessed at the end of it. We wish you all a very Merry Christmas

I love how we can still influence each other even though we are miles apart. A few of them have inspired me to do a year in review. However, since it would take too long to write it out, assuming my brain could remember everything, I figured picking one or two pictures from each month would be an easier way for me to document our year. Here goes!

I have to admit, I was a little nervous when we put up our tree. I didn’t know what to expect with “Kitty, the cat”. He was an amazingly good cat! All he did was sleep under the tree, he loved it under there.

I know we will never get as lucky was we did if we were to ever get another cat. This cat, is so well behaved, I just love him. The kids however, have renamed him, “the mommy stealer”. Ha! I have to admit, he is my favorite PET.

Mokey’s favorite thing is to play with ribbon, he could play all day if we had the time. Some days we see him just sitting by his ribbon hoping someone will feel sorry for him and play. He also loves bouncy balls, we often hear him batting them around on the hardwoods after we go up to bed.

Mokey and Zippy are buds, he tolerates Bennett, but has it out for poor Piper. Mo is the gatekeeper to the upstairs and doesn’t allow them to come up unless I am with them. It is quite funny to watch the dynamic with this nutty critters.

I just wish that spirit could last all year long. A spirit of love, kindness (most of the time) and giving of oneself to others. We did experience this feeling of giving and unity one other time this year, during the fires of 2012 in our area. It is a one of my most favorite things to watch God’s people treat each other so longingly. God knows my greatest desire is for our world to be more like that for our children and grandchildren in the years to come.

Anyway……

I captured our Christmas season in photographs. The joy in smiles, the heart in giving and the spirit of love.
